"학원도 다니고 숙제도 꼬박꼬박 하는데 영어 점수가 그대로예요." 상담에서 가장 자주 듣는 이야기입니다. 이럴 때 공부 시간을 더 늘리는 것으로는 잘 해결되지 않습니다. 문제는 양이 아니라 어느 영역이 막혔는가인 경우가 많기 때문입니다.
English is not just one subject
English tests actually ask about several skills at once.
- 어휘 — 단어의 뜻뿐 아니라 쓰임새까지 아는가
- 독해 — 문장을 넘어 글의 흐름을 잡는가
- 문법 — 규칙을 알고, 그것을 문장에 적용하는가
- 서술형 — 아는 것을 직접 써낼 수 있는가
- 듣기 — 소리로 들어오는 정보를 처리하는가
If one of these areas is blocked, your overall score will be reduced. So, we need to find out ‘where it is blocked’ first.
3 things you can easily miss
1. There is a difference between ‘memorizing’ and ‘knowing’ a word
There are times when you pass the vocabulary test but get stuck on the passage. This is because I only memorized one meaning. How the same word is used in a sentence, To be effective in reading comprehension, you must learn which words they are paired with.
2. Solve grammar only as a problem and do not connect it to writing
There are many students who are good at solving grammar workbooks, but lose points on descriptive questions. Multiple choice is the ability to ‘choose’ and descriptive is the ability to ‘create’. If you miss the training of writing sentences using the grammar you learned, it will be revealed on the test.
3. Just ‘re-solve’ the wrong problem and do not classify it.
Even if you write a wrong answer note, if you do not share why you were wrong, the same mistake will be repeated. Is it because I don't know the words, because I can't see the sentence structure, or because I misread the question? Divide by cause to decide what to study next.
Diagnosis first, prescription second
When your grades are stagnant, what you need is not 'more' but 'exactly where to start'. Open your recent test paper and divide the questions you got wrong into the five areas above. It becomes relatively clear where to spend your time.
Advantages of small elite classes
This diagnosis has different consequences for each student. Even if they are in the same class, some students have problems with vocabulary and others have problems with descriptive writing. Teaching center classes with a small number of students have the advantage of allowing individual diagnosis and prescription.
