"문제집을 세 권이나 풀었는데 시험만 보면 틀려요." 수학 상담에서 흔히 나오는 이야기입니다. 문제를 많이 푸는 것과 잘 푸는 것은 서로 다른 일입니다.

Why doesn’t it go up even if I release a lot?

If you solve the same type over and over again, it becomes familiar. However, the test questions come out with slightly different conditions. This is why your hand stops if it doesn't look familiar.

In other words, what is lacking is not the amount of practice, but the ability to decide what to do first when faced with a problem that you see for the first time.

Thinking Sequence — Four Steps

1. What is this question asking?

This is the step that is most often skipped. If you substitute numbers first without reading the problem to the end, You will get the wrong answer. You should be able to say in one sentence what you need to save.

2. What are the given conditions?

Summarize all the conditions in the problem. There are very few conditions in math problems that are useless. If there are unwritten conditions, the solution is usually in the wrong direction.

3. What concepts are needed?

This step makes the difference in your skills. It is the power of looking at conditions and goals and thinking, ‘This is a question of using which characteristics of which unit.’ If you just memorize the concepts and don't practice writing them out, you won't pass the exam.

4. Which solution is faster?

There are usually multiple paths to the right answer. In tests where time is limited, you need to make the decision to choose a 'fast solution method' rather than a 'solution method'.

Students who are quick at calculating and students with good grades

Calculation speed helps, but doesn't make a score on its own. Calculation is about walking a set path, and difficult problems arise from choosing a path. This is why, as you get to the top, your score is determined by your judgment rather than your calculation skills.

Checks you can do at home

When you reexamine a question you got wrong, don't stop at just guessing the answer, ask this question.

  • What was this problem about?
  • Were there any conditions I didn't write about?
  • What concept should you have come up with?
  • Was there a faster solution?

If you can answer these four questions, the problem becomes truly yours.
